A letter to a fledging tarot reader...

Dear tarot-reader-in-training,

There’s so much that I want to tell you, but I’m not sure where to start. I look at you and I see myself. I will always remember the day I got my first deck and I hope that you’ll always remember yours too, because that day marked the start of an incredible journey, whether you’re aware of it or not.

It doesn’t matter if you go on to read for thousands of people in this lifetime or if you solely use tarot for yourself, but you will become a catalyst for transformation. An agent of positive change.

I want to tell you that even if how you came to possess your first deck seemed really ordinary and run-of-the-mill, it most certainly wasn’t. There are greater forces at work in this world and I truly believe that tarot finds the right people. Tarot seeks out the seers, the visionaries, the healers. If you’re holding a deck right now, I can tell you that there’s a 99.9 per cent chance that you’ve held one before in a previous lifetime. That’s why it all feels so familiar. When you close your eyes and start to shuffle, that’s why it feels so comfortable.

The most important thing for you to know is that you shouldn’t doubt yourself. Doubt will arise, and it will come back again and again, but whatever you see in a spread, whatever niggles crop up you should trust them. Yes, a tarot card is just a glorified piece of cardboard, but it helps to open you up to your intuition and that’s something you should always trust, no matter what. Say what you see. Say what you feel. Say what you sense.

I want you to know that there will be people who will try to tear you down. Who will be afraid of what you can do. Who will rubbish your intuitions. Pay no attention to them. You are a sensitive soul who is so in touch with the world and the heavens. You are divine and you shouldn’t allow these people to hurt you. Keep doing what you’re doing. Keep forging ahead. It may not seem like it now, but you will help yourself so much through tarot in the coming weeks, months and years and you will help thousands change their lives for the better through your use of these cards if that’s what you want to do.

When it comes to your study, follow your intuition. Just because one branch of this art has a well-respected tradition behind it, don’t feel as though you have to conform. Take what you like, take what resonates, and leave the rest behind you. Forge your own path and don’t be afraid to bring your creativity into the mix. Amazing things happen when your personal creativity is ignited.

And don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. We are all faced with the tough readings, whether they’re for ourselves or others. Your sensitivity is a gift and if you allow yourself to be vulnerable you will be able to connect with yourself and with others in such a deeply healing way. Allow your vulnerability to be expressed through your practice. Keep your reading a safe, non-judgemental space where the only objective is to hold space and become a source of compassion.

I want you to know that your reading preferences will change. As will your deck preferences. Sometimes you’ll be diligent with those daily draws, other times you will give up on them, frustrated by the messages that the cards reflect back to you.

I want you to know that it’s okay to fall away from your practice. It’s okay if you don’t practice for months or years, but you will return because this is something that is in your blood. And tarot will always welcome you back. Your intuition will always welcome you home.

You are stepping onto a path that is incredible, joyous, wonderful and awe-inspiring. But also one that is tough and hard and requires great heart and bravery, not because the art itself is hard, but because as a reader you will examine every aspect of yourself and your life, and you will always seek to do better, to live more fully and to open your heart as wide as you can.

And that, no matter what anyone else says, is so admirable.

You are not just a tarot reader. You are a revolutionary, a warrior, a healer and a light that seeks to raise others higher.

I bow to you and thank you. With you, all of us learn more. Thanks to you, thousands will be inspired. With you, perspectives change and hearts open. With you, healing occurs.

Through the good draws and the bad,
Your friend in the cards.
